The Birth and Growth of Urban Hikes KC with Lisa Peña
Five years ago, Urban Hikes KC started redefining exploration in Kansas City. Founded by Lisa Peña and thanks to her adventurous spirit and curiosity, it has become a go-to for those looking to uncover the city’s hidden treasures while immersing themselves in its vibrant culture.
Lisa is a Kansas City native with a passion for nature and urban life. As an avid explorer and former volunteer for the Peace Corps, her travels have shaped her unique perspective on the world, instilling a profound appreciation of Kansas City’s beauty.
Combining those experiences, Lisa founded Urban Hikes KC to share her city with others while having fun! From there she built a team of guides and creatives who have helped her create and promote more than 15 specialized hikes including bike routes through Kansas City. To date, they have shared layers of KC’s deep history, beautiful art, and cool neighborhoods with over 3,900 people!
Spreading the Word and Making a Mark
The Urban Hikes KC program has left an indelible mark on the city’s tourism landscape, drawing accolades and recognition from everywhere. In 2021 and 2023, the team was awarded the Pitch KC Best of KC awards. In 2023 The KC Downtown Council awarded Lisa the Urban Hero Award. They’ve also earned the 2021 Visit KCK Tourism Champion title and the 2023 Greater Kansas City Chamber of Commerce Small Business Superstar title, and more awards keep coming.
They have also developed connections worldwide, including collaborations through the Young Leaders of the Americas Program with a fellow from St. Vincent and The Grenadines and Latin America.
As Urban Hikes KC commemorates five years of exploration and adventure, Lisa reflects on the journey with gratitude to the Lord for His provision, protection and creative ideas. “These past five years have been an incredible whirlwind of discovery and growth,” she shares. “I’m immensely grateful for the support of our community and the opportunity to showcase the beauty and untold history of Kansas City in all its forms.”
