It’s official! We launched our first two Library District Urban Hikes this April with National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) staff, just in time to celebrate National Library Week! It was all hands on deck with our expert guides Lori and Christy leading the hikes. The route highlights the stunning Central Library and is packed with architectural variety—historic bank buildings and public art.
Libraries aren’t just about books—they’re all about learning, culture, creativity, and bringing people together. In addition to our Library District Urban Hike, we pass by three different KCMO Libraries on our urban hikes: Central Library, Irene Ruiz Library, and Plaza Library.
Irene Ruiz Library: A Community Anchor

While on our Crossroads & Westside Urban Hike we introduce urban explorers to Mexican American advocate Irene H. Ruíz. While working for the Kansas City Public Library, Irene hosted civil rights leaders and social justice advocates from across the nation including César Chávez. She was also responsible for collecting and organizing a number of oral histories from Mexican immigrant families in the Westside! This branch is a vital part of the neighborhood, continuing Ruiz’s mission of community empowerment.
Central Library: A Historic Gem

Located at 10th and Baltimore, the Central Library and its “Community Bookshelf” parking garage are some of downtown Kansas City’s most striking landmarks. Originally built in 1906 as the First National Bank, the building was transformed into the Central Library after a major renovation in 2004. Visitors today can admire its architecture, explore exhibits, attend events, and catch a breathtaking view from its rooftop social area. The Central Library is a perfect symbol of how public spaces can evolve while preserving their rich history.

During our Library District Urban Hike, in addition to sharing the history of this building we visit the rooftop, play with giant chess pieces and get a refreshing view of the surrounding art deco buildings. We also go into the basement and experience their massive vault converted into a movie theater.
-Did you know that the Central Library has FREE printing for up to 50 black and white pages?
– An excellent coffee and pastry shop with a mission called The Nook
-A small business and employment department
-The Missouri Valley Special Collections on the fifth floor which holds the most extensive collection of research books and articles about Kansas City. Much of this collection can be found online here.
Plaza Library: Modern and Welcoming

During our Plaza & Crestwood Urban Hike we walk by the Plaza Branch Library, just south of the
Country Club Plaza. Opened in 2005, this location celebrated 20 years of service in the
community this month! Located in a former retail space, the Plaza Library brings creativity and
innovation to the community with expansive windows offering stunning views of the Country
Club Plaza and the surrounding urban landscape. With an engaging and colorful children’s
area, business resources, art exhibits, and public programs, the Plaza Branch reflects the
vibrant spirit of the Plaza itself.
