On our urban hikes, it’s not uncommon to visit powerful tributes to those who’ve served in the military, from WWI commanders to local veterans honored in quiet corners of the city.
Before we dive into these spots, we’re highlighting Warrior’ Ascent, a nonprofit doing incredible work for veterans. This Kansas City–based organization hosts a 5-day, evidence-based program to support veterans with PTSD, helping them heal and find community after service. Now, lace up your walking shoes and let’s explore some of the war memorials you’ll find on our routes.
Liberty Memorial – Crossroads/Westside Urban Hike
It’s the most iconic veteran memorial in Kansas City—and one of the most moving. The Liberty Memorial, part of the National WWI Museum, was dedicated in 1926 in front of 150,000-plus people, including five Allied commanders who had fought together in World War I but had never actually met in person until that day in KC. The panoramic views of Union Station and downtown allow urban hikers to feel the hope for peace that shaped this moment.

While not a war memorial in the traditional sense, the Quindaro Ruins in Kansas City, Kansas honor the fight for freedom. Once a thriving abolitionist town and stop on the Underground Railroad, Quindaro was a hub for formerly enslaved people and free Black families during the pre and post Civil War era.
While hiking through the hilly forested trails of the Town of Quindaro, you’ll see stone foundations and historical markers that offer a glimpse into this powerful part of American history. It’s a reminder of the many forms bravery can take.

North KC’s Mini Statue of Liberty & Memorial Park – North Kansas City Urban Hike
This one’s a surprise and a delight. In the heart of North Kansas City sits a charming Memorial Park with a mini Statue of Liberty standing tall—one of hundreds installed around the U.S. in the 1950s as part of a Boy Scouts campaign called “Strengthen the Arm of Liberty.”
The park includes plaques and tributes to local veterans, and it’s a peaceful green space to pause and reflect. Plus, it’s the perfect selfie spot.

Rosedale WWI Memorial Arch – Rosedale, Volker & Roanoke Urban Hike
Tucked into the hills of Kansas City, Kansas, the Rosedale Arch was inspired by the Arc de Triomphe and this memorial was built to honor Rosedale residents who served in World War I. Climb up for a beautiful view of Downtown KC, and take a moment to appreciate the simplicity and strength of this tribute.

Memorial Hall – Strawberry Hill & Downtown KCK Urban Hike
Another KCK landmark, Memorial Hall has been a gathering place and tribute to service members since 1925. While the interior is often used for community events, the name and façade still honor veterans past and present.
See it in person: You’ll pass Memorial Hall on our Strawberry Hill & Downtown KCK Urban Hike.
Battle of Westport Monument – Plaza Lights & Crestwood Urban Hike
Known as the “Gettysburg of the West,” the Battle of Westport was one of the largest Civil War battles fought west of the Mississippi. Today, a small monument in Loose Park honors this pivotal clash. It’s easy to miss if you’re not looking, but we always stop to share the story during our Plaza Lights Urban Hike in December.

Each of these memorials highlight stories of bravery, sacrifice, and community that you might not expect to find tucked into a city stroll. If you’re ready to see them for yourself, then grab your crew, lace up your shoes, and let’s hit the urban trails.
