Walk This Way: Valentine’s, Palatine’s & Galentine’s Fun in Kansas City

Mosaic like art piece by Artist Jason Pollen

The month of love is around the corner and Kansas City is the perfect canvas for date ideas. Urban Hikes Kansas City is offering a Valentine’s Day Wine & Cheese Hike on February 14 but we have limited space, so below are some other creative ideas to get you outside this February. From taco trails to dive bar hopping and nature hikes, the City is filled with ways you can express your love for family, friends and that special someone while being active!

Read and Ride: Make it a Library & Streetcar Day!

KC Streetcar running along Main Street

Park at the Plaza Branch Library and pick out a meaningful kids book to read to each other. Then find a different book to check out to read while on the streetcar. Get off at the Downtown stop for the Central  Library and visit the library and explore each level, the artwork and even the hidden vault in the basement.

Step by Step: Love on Troost

Mural by Alexander Austin

Bundle up for a day of walking! Pull up a map and choose a few shops, restaurants or coffee shops to visit during the walk. You can make this walk as long as you’d like and with approximately 10 walkable miles, you have plenty of walking distance. You can park at 12th Street and Troost, then walk south, stopping into shops along the way until you reach the end of the route you mapped out.  When you’re done, just hop on the Troost Max or the 25 Troost bus and return to your starting point. The bus is free and easy to ride! You can look up the bus routes under the corresponding bus shelters or on your phone.

Nature Hike Date

Parkville Nature Sanctuary on a snowy day

Put on some comfy boots, grab your thermos and pack some hot ginger tea for this one! Check out Parma Woods, Parkville Nature Sanctuary, Swope Park Trails or the Kansas Rozarks Nature Trails for some outdoor adventures. Though some of the trees may be bare, you can still grab snapshots of sunset or wild life and have meaningful conversation while exploring.

Bar Hopping Along Strawberry Hill

Chicago’s Bar in KCK

Located on the hills overlooking downtown Kansas City, Strawberry Hill is the perfect place for drinks and bar bites with that special someone or group! The area is peppered with creative, eclectic and delicious dive bars. Pull up your search engine and look for dive bars in Strawberry Hill to prepare a walking route from place to place.

Try the Taco Trail

Tacos El Güero Restaurant along Minnesota Ave in KCK

You’ll want to start setting reservations ASAP to get on this trail! It runs through KCK and has been extended into 2026, so you have more time for a flavor-filled experience. Download the Taco Trail App and walk your way through a handful of authentic Mexican restaurants, get prizes for visiting, all just steps apart.

For the Love of Art

Art by Jason Pollen at Leedy Voulkos Art Center

Soak up part of Kansas City’s art scene! Visit Crossroads Art Galleries on Baltimore Ave and see some of the work by a few of our favorites, Leedy-Voulkos, Cebera, and Sherry Leedy, then take the KC Streetcar to head to Kemper Museum of Contemporary Art and the Nelson Atkins Museum of Art. These locations are open at no cost every weekend and on some weekdays.

Make a day of KC’s art museums: grab coffee at Oil & Linen, visit the Kemper Museum of Art, follow the Arterie to KCAI Gallery, then head to the Nelson-Atkins and wrap it up with lunch at Rozzelle Court.

These ideas come straight from the historic Kansas City neighborhoods we explore on our urban hikes. We offer regular hikes in many of these areas so check out our urban hike calendar to see what’s coming up.
