Five Kansas City Urban Hikes With Views That Are Worth Bundling Up For

Some Kansas City views are worth the walk! Grab a friend, bring the family, meet up with someone or come explore solo to one of these five Urban Hikes KC experiences. As the temperature dips, these urban trails are a great way to get outside, see the city from a different perspective and discover some of the stories hiding in plain sight. 18th & Vine Urban Hike Approximately 2.5 miles

Take a shorter urban hike with plenty to explore over three hours, including this beautiful view that mixes the former Work Castle and the KC skyline. As you make your way through the 18th & Vine District, you’ll see historic buildings, murals, Black-owned businesses and landmarks connected to the neighborhood’s history as a major hub for Black culture and Kansas City jazz.

Quindaro Ruins Urban Hike Approximately 3 hilly miles

Take in a sweeping view toward the Missouri River from the Quindaro Overlook, along with a view of the former Kanza Ave. that connects modern Wyandotte County to the historic pre-Civil War structures below. As you explore, you’ll learn about freedom seekers, the Underground Railroad and Western University, the first HBCU west of the Mississippi.

River Market Urban Hike Approximately 2.5 miles

Explore one of Kansas City’s oldest neighborhoods on a mostly flat hike before crossing the Town of Kansas Bridge for a view of the Missouri River. Along the way, you’ll hear stories of the mafia, Annie Chambers and Lewis & Clark, while taking in historic murals by José Faus.

Plaza Lights & Crestwood Urban Hike Approximately 4.5 miles

See the Kansas City Plaza Lights from a whole new perspective as you explore the Country Club Plaza and Crestwood. You’ll learn about the history behind the Plaza, the impact of J.C. Nichols, the Plaza lighting tradition and the surrounding neighborhoods while taking in one of Kansas City’s most recognizable holiday views.

Crossroads Art District & Westside Urban Hike Approximately 4 miles

Join us for this hilly experience! Explore Kansas City history, colorful murals and neighborhood architecture before making your way to Observation Park for a view of the city from above. You’ll also have the opportunity to experience the Kansas City streetcar as part of your urban adventure.
